Archives For Psalm 139

You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
(Psalm 139:3)

God knows your heart, He knows exactly how much you can bear. That may be more than you think, but He has promised not to put upon you more than you can endure (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Because God knows us better than we even know ourselves, and God’s purpose is to be glorified in all things (1 Corinthians 10:31) and true faith glorifies God (Ephesians 1:12), then we must be tested so that our faith in Jesus can be shown to all creation as being true (1 Peter 1:6-7).

There is a point to the trials in your life; to glorify God. When this is the purpose of it and Jesus is interceding for you (Romans 8:34), you can be sure that He will not let your faith fail (Luke 22:32).

On demand: God's Word

January 10, 2010

You know when I sit and when I rise up;
You discern my thoughts from afar.

Psalm 139:2

God knows every thing I do. He also knows every thought I have. Therefore He knows when my thoughts, attitudes and actions do not line up.

God sees me as other people see me, as you see me. He also sees me as I see myself, He knows my thoughts, emotions and impulses. He understands when I try to do good but it turns out all wrong. He sees clearly when I know the good I should do but do not do it (James 4:17).

Because God knows me this intimately, He is able to guide me in the finest details of my life. He brings His word to bear exactly where it is needed, at the point of my thoughts and intentions (Hebrews 4:12) so that I need not be a slave to sin, I can choose righteousness (Romans 6:17-18).

Thanks be to God!

Search me?!

January 7, 2010

Psalm 139:1-4:
O Lord, you have searched me and known me!

This has profound implications for prayer. My own heart is deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9) and my prayers inarticulate (Romans 8:26), yet God knows exactly what I need before I even ask (Matthew 6:8). He knows if there is secret sin in my heart (Psalm 90:8), conversely, He also knows how much I love Him (John 21:17).

If I stray from God, His knowledge of my every thought and deed is terrifying, if I draw near to Him it is a great comfort. Either way, His total knowledge of me is essential because this is what keeps me alive (Matthew 10:29-30).

Known before existence

Pause for a moment and ponder the implications of this:

“The knowledge God has of this world is independent of this world for its existence”
(Sinclair Ferguson reflecting upon Psalm 139:16).

If interested, listen to the message by Sinclair Ferguson from the 2004 Ligonier Conference.
